Graffiti tree?

Lots of people have visited this tree and carved their names in it, sometimes their own name and the name of their girlfriend or boyfriend.  Sometimes, people come back to the same tree years later to see their initials again.  What do you think about it?  Do you think this is a good idea or not?  Would you call this graffiti?  Do you think it matters that it's a tree rather than a wall?

  1. I think this is a good idea because you can look back and see what you have writen and see what has changed.

    1. I think it's a good idea for the people as they can look back at their writing in years to come, but what about the tree?

  2. I disagree with puzzleworker that it's a good idea. I can see that it would be a nice reminder for the people who graffitied the tree but surely they'd have that memory I. Their head anyway if it was important to the them and the tree alone could be that reminder. I love the beauty of a tree and the peacefulness of a forest. If I walk through an area of such natural beauty and someone has graffitied it then it spoils it for me. Although, I don't mind graffiti, as long as it isn't offensive, in more urban environments.

  3. Faddyapple-

It depends if you're thinking about the environment or past. If you're thinking about the past it's great because you can remember all the great times a few years/weeks/days ago :-)............ If you're thinking about the environment it's probably worse because the tree might get damaged by the cuts...

    1. I agree with you Faddyapple, but isn't this just one tree out of thousands? I think if we care about the environment then maybe we should worry more about the chopping down of hundreds of thousands of trees in the Brazilian rainforest, rather than a few names carved into a single tree. What does anyone else think?

  4. My first thought was whether the tree had any feelings about it. We would say that a tree is a living thing but I wonder if it's a different kind of living thing to, say, animals? Some of us have read The Giving Tree and said that if you think a tree can think, then you must be using your imagination. Even if we were to agree a tree doesn't have feelings, does that mean we can treat it how we like?
