Is the man in danger? Does he know he's trapped in a bottle? If the tide came in would he be taken to a different land? Does the person want to break out?
This instantly made me think about one of my favourite books 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly', which is all about loneliness and being trapped, but at the same time staying positive and resilient. So the questions I would ask are...
Are we all lonely sometimes? Do you have to be on your own to feel lonely? If you feel trapped, how do you escape?
The scene is quite dark which makes me think the person is perhaps protecting themselves from a problem and they may be hiding behind the helmet.. Does hiding from a problem keep us safe?
After reading Ginger's comments I think I will find the story 'The Diving Bell And The Butterfly' as I think it would be a good read. And building on Ginger's question of ' Do you have to be alone to feel trapped?' I think you often feel more trapped when you are surrounded by people as all the people around you expect you to behave in a certain and way and do certain things. Sometimes because all the people around you want you to do different things sometimes this results in you feeling trapped . Escape, I think, often comes when you are alone.
I agree with you Catwoman that sometimes being alone may be an escape from feeling trapped as you can truly be yourself in your own company and you reflect on your situation. Going back to the question however 'If you feel trapped, how do you escape?', I disagree that being on your own is always the answer. Sometimes you may have to interact with other people to escape that feeling. What about people who feel trapped by loneliness, illness or sadness? Don't you think seeking help from others may be their escape?
I think, Ginger, the important word in your question is 'feel' you can feel trapped but not actually be trapped. So, maybe, depending on what you feel trapped about you could try looking at it differently and try changing how you feel about the situation.

Some interesting questions. I really like 'Does he know he's trapped in a bottle?' But what does being trapped mean? Are we all trapped in some way?

Great question Nutty! Hiding from problems can keep us safe, for example if the problem is a tiger stalking you in the jungle.

ReplyDeleteI agree, thank you for that. I'm much clearer on the whole 'trapped' concept now.

DeleteIs the person alone? What is alone?
ReplyDeleteI love the question 'What is alone?' I think you can be alone in a crowd of people or alone even when your with friends. It's all about how you feel.

Yes, I agree with you Coleridge Blog Team you can be with a group of friends/family/strangers and feel alone. As 'alone' is a feeling like you said.
